Impact of Two-Way Immersion Versus English Immersion on Reading Scores: A Meta-Analysis

Mon, April 7, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Convention Center, Floor: Terrrace Level, Terrace III

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine if there are differences in reading performance scores of Hispanic school age English learners (ELs) instructed in two-way Spanish/ English immersion (TWI) and ELs instructed in an English immersion setting. TWI is a promising and innovative, although not sufficiently researched, instruction methodology for second language learners. There is an ongoing debate about whether bilingual vs. English immersion education is more beneficial for instructing this heterogeneous population. Our meta-analysis indicated that TWI and EI work equally well for the reading instruction of EL students.
