Joseph Kinmont Hart, Reed College, and Academic Freedom

Abstract

This paper explores the issue of academic freedom in the context of Reed College from 1917-1919. With Reed’s unique president, William T. Foster, Hart represented the tenuous nature of academics in the Pacific Northwest at a time of national strife and world war. Since academic freedom was a concept developing during the same time frame, the context of World War I and other faculty firings will also be used in this paper to help in understanding the role of faculty in times of war, specifically.
