A School-Wide Approach to Data-Informed School Improvement in the Republic of Ireland

Abstract

Systematic data use among educators in the Republic of Ireland has become a significant feature of recent policy documents from the Department of Education and Skills (DES, 2011a; DES, 2013). The present study outlines the development of a school-wide intervention designed to facilitate a data-informed, collaborative approach to school improvement and subsequently explores the implementation of the intervention in 18 elementary schools. Qualitative and quantitative data were gathered and an Action Research methodology adopted. Preliminary research findings provide evidence of barriers and supports for data-use within the Irish education system. Implications for future practice and policy are suggested.
