Multiple Empowering Dialogues: A Conceptual Framework for Holistic Education

Fri, April 4, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Marriott, Floor: Fourth Level, 412

Abstract

In this paper I propose an empowering humanistic-holistic education based on a broad repertoire of pedagogical dialogues: from the classical Socratic, Confucian and Talmudic dialogues, to the modern ones associated with the works of Nietzsche, Buber, Korczak, Rogers, Gadamer, Habermas, Noddings and Levinas. These forms of dialogue are introduced as a framework for humanist teachers – teachers who are seriously determined to reach all children – via diverse avenues to their minds and souls. Very much like other frameworks or paradigms of holistic education – progressive education, multiple intelligences, and manifold literacies – the multiple dialogue framework offers diverse pedagogical methods as avenues to the manifold aspects of human existence as well as to the great diversity among individual students.
