Fri, April 4, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Marriott, Floor: Fourth Level, Franklin 7

Abstract

This presentation reports an implementation study of the Virtual Tutoring System (VTS) to enhance college students’ reading motivation, engagement, and performance. The VTS presents a Web-based virtual tutoring environment that embodies the sources of motivation and engagement suggested in self-determination theory. In this study, students who used the VTS were compared to those who used an online reading guide (RG) with regard to their motivation, engagement, and performance. Findings indicated that students in the VTS group demonstrated a higher reading performance implying deeper engagement in reading activities as compared to those in the RG group. Results from both quantitative and qualitative data analyses are presented and the integrated findings are discussed.
