Teaching K-12 history with museums is hampered by a lack of transparency or “footnotes.” This paper discusses a rationale for opening up the process in which museums construct the past, advocates for a new conceptual model akin to exhibit footnotes, and presents findings from a case of footnotes imbedded in a history museum exhibit.
