Promises and Pitfalls of Inclusive Education: The Case of Eastern European Roma

Sun, April 6, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Convention Center, Floor: 100 Level, 121B

Abstract

This paper addresses the policy and politics of inclusion of Eastern European Roma students into mainstream educational systems. Drawing upon the scholarship and reports on inclusion and its practical achievements, it traces the idea of inclusion, what it came to represent in current educational discourse, and how inclusive efforts are working (or not) in the Decade of Roma Inclusion (2005-2015), a European stamp policy that attempts to alleviate and eliminate the effects of discrimination and marginalization of European Roma.
