The Viability of Combining Academic and Career Pathways: A Study of Linked Learning

Mon, April 7, 8:15 to 9:45am, Convention Center, Floor: 100 Level, 115B

Abstract

In an attempt to prepare students for the 21st century, educators and policymakers have turned to educational programs that combine career and academic pathways. This paper reports findings from a year long qualitative study of eight schools in five California districts implementing Linked Learning, a program demanding a reorganization of schooling to improve the learning of high school students. Using a socio-cultural perspective, this study examines how the actions of principals and district leaders, as well as the structural and cultural factors within a school, district and state context, impacted implementation of the reform. Reorganization was insufficient to keep LL’s promise of providing career and academic readiness and a more equitable educational opportunity for all students.
