This study fits this year Annual Meeting theme by using educational research to innovate the practice of history teaching in upper general education, focussing on historical contextualisation. This design based study addresses how and what kind of historical context students construct. Two interventions, based on design principles to scaffold students historical contextualisation, were developed. The talk and answers of 65 pairs of students, in seven different classes in five schools were analysed. Provisional results show that students construction of a historical context can be guided through well designed assignments.
