Research shows that problem-based inquiry fosters students’ acquisition of the 21st century competencies necessary for success in college and careers. The Next Generation Science Standards call for schools to arm students with problem solving and critical thinking competencies, as well as the ability to work collaboratively. It also requires a shift from teacher to student-centered learning. This paper explores the benefits and challenges of implementing problem-based inquiry in a summer school setting to assist teachers in transitioning to a student-centered inquiry classroom. A significant challenge for teachers was balancing the contradictory goals of accountability and coverage versus letting go to promote inquiry learning.
