Abstract

Drawing on critical race theory, social identity theory and Humanism, we examine the disenfranchising effects of Neoliberal education on students of an intervention program, highlighting the rejection of culture resulting in social reproduction and control. The purpose of this paper is to name the problems students face, identifying the socio-cultural and racial oppression through examination of a teacher’s experience in a socially stratified community on California’s Central Coast. We further examine the critical care and optimism which can transcend many of the inequitable policies and practices present in educational contexts, sharing insights for creating conditions for inclusive education.
