Abstract

Contemporary school administrators require preparation beyond traditional fare, including attention to emotion in leadership. The purpose of this paper was to apply the findings of a study on emotion in leadership (Author, in press) to leadership preparation learning and teaching. Case studies were written based on the Emotion in Leadership Model which described how leaders processed emotion and integrated emotion into leadership. Candidates in educational leadership classes were introduced to the topic of emotion in leadership and relevant cases. Case studies assisted students in understanding how to unravel and interpret emotion following critical incidents. Self-reflection on emotion in leadership was used as a tool to help future leaders understand themselves, improve communication, and avoid misunderstandings, strengthening capacity to lead.
