The purpose of this paper is to explain the role of school governance (governing without government) in contemporary British education and explore its relationship to a range of different accountability frameworks, including legal, hierarchical, performative, consumer, participative, corporate, professional, network and moral. The main argument of this paper is that governance is mediated by the articulation and combination of different types of accountability. These arrangements are context-specific and driven by socio-economic, geographical and institutional contingencies which impact the structure, ethos and community integrity of schools and outcomes in learning and achievement for pupils.
