Learner Performance in Statistics: A Comparison Across Three Instructional Environments

Sun, April 6, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Convention Center, Floor: 200 Level, Hall E

Abstract

Based on the constructivist view of learning, the present study compares two active instructional methods on learning descriptive statistics. The first learning environment emphasized self-explanation and the second learning environment focused on strengthening inquiry learning. These two experimental methods were compared to the traditional method of teaching statistics.
The research representative sample included about 300 students, and the data were collected using quantitative and qualitative instruments.
The findings of this research point to the advantages of constructivist-based teaching methods in descriptive statistics to improve student achievement and their attitudes. The greatest impact of such active learning environments was in promoting higher order thinking and statistical deep understanding, especially on the brighter students.
