Recruiting High-Performing Candidates to the Teaching Profession

Mon, April 7, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Convention Center, Floor: Terrace Level, Terrace IV

Abstract

This study aims to rigorously evaluate certain aspects concerning one of the most visible national programs designed to attract high-performing candidates to the teaching profession in Israel - The Project for Excellent Students – ESP. The central focus of this study is to follow-up ESP graduates as compared to other graduates, six to eight years after graduation, to examine their integration in the teaching profession and their reasons for dropping-out.
Our study used nationally representative 468 graduates from three cohorts. The findings point out to the conclusion that implementing a special program for excellent students while they are in the colleges will not, by itself, improve the workforce by very much, especially when high-performing and idealistic candidates are involved.
