Social Justice Leadership on the U.S.-Mexico Border

Abstract

This proposal explores preliminary findings from an ongoing study focused on the work of school leaders who promote social justice through creating more inclusive and equitable schools for English Language Learners (ELLs). This multi-case study describes the challenges of principals working in a large, urban school district in West Texas along the US-Mexico Border. Analysis of interviews, documents, and observations revealed the actions, values, and orientations of leaders and the contextual challenges they confront in their social justice work. Implications for how principals are prepared, future research and theory are presented.
