We examine the pedagogical value of video documentary making in science in two different afterschool programs. We are interested in how youth represent science and self in science through video as they work with diverse objects and ways of knowing science and engage in the creative construction of a storyline through multiple forms of expression (acting, music, movement, showing meaningful art and interviewing). Grounded in sociocultural historical theory, video making is understood as a tool that mediates knowing and being in science and life-long learning. Analysis of seven video productions underlines the complex improvisational work youth engaged in as they wove together science, self and youth culture, making a compelling case for its pedagogical value in science education.
