SOAR in High School: A Mixed-Methods Investigation of a Study Strategy System

Abstract

Underachievement and attrition are major problems among U.S. high school students. These students need a study system that is effective while being easy to use. A recently developed study system, SOAR, is theoretically based and empirically supported. However, previous research on SOAR has focused on college students and primarily used instructor-provided materials. This was the first study to test SOAR with high school students and student-generated materials. Participants studied information about wildcats in preparation for fact and relationship tests. Results confirmed the following: a) SOAR studiers outperformed independent studiers, b) high school students readily learned how to use SOAR, and c) SOAR studiers reported they were more likely to use effective SOAR strategies in the future.
