This qualitative study was designed to examine four Missouri Teachers of the Year and their mentors through the invitational leadership theory, which is a holistic approach that nurtures the belief everyone is intrinsically motivated and it is the leaders’ responsibility to unleash their true potential (Purkey & Siegel, 2003). Data revealed three themes: 1) Collaborative Shared Spirit; 2) Twofold Motivational Influence; and 3) Ardent Empathic Association. Conclusions indicated: the mentor practices were consistent with invitational leadership characteristics; the mentor/ mentee environments were inviting to serve the adult learner; and there was a continuous need for relationship building within the mentor/mentee experience. These results provide further insight into the implications for a successful mentoring program.
