This conceptual/theoretical study examined how learning environment research might be advanced by the application of flow theory research approaches. Reports of empirical investigations into flow theory, classroom engagement and classroom learning environments provided the material for an inductive analysis. Three aspects were identified – theories of flow and optimal learning environments, the ontology of flow and the learning environment, and data collection tools and procedures. These are discussed and their potential benefits to learning environment research are evaluated. Flow theory presents the learning environment as an enjoyable, intrinsically motivating, and engaging experience. The experience is lived and subjective. Flow theory data collection procedures capture the immediacy of experiences rather than recollections or interpretations of past events.
