Abstract

This critical ethnography is concerned with what we can learn from the residences between home and traditional school, like that of community-based organizations (CBO) that serves youth and Latina women surviving domestic violence. These types of ‘homes’, in some respect, can offer marginalized community members a more significant sense of “homeplace.” This project explores such possibilities as “Casa de Humildad” emerges as a mediator of potential to a community otherwise neglected. The culturally relevant pedagogy (CRP) of the organization provided nuanced understandings of “homeplace” praxis. We reason that the strategic ethical dispositions and subsequent practices of the CBO educators provide vital insight into how practioners can further enact transgressive culturally relevant pedagogy.
