Although identifying online instructors’ specific scaffolding strategies to facilitate interaction among students and between students and instructors is valuable, few researchers have systematically attempted to do so. In this study a psychometric scale was developed to identify instructors’ scaffolding strategies to promote interaction in online classes. Two separate studies were conducted. Exploratory factor analysis revealed one factor structure associated with instructors’ scaffolding strategies for interaction. Confirmatory factor analysis indicated statistically good model fits with different participants recruited from another institution. In addition, correlations with peer presence, instructor presence, learning, and connectedness scales were conducted to determine convergent validity. The scale for instructors’ scaffolding strategies to promote interaction was reliable and valid in online learning environments.
