Adolescents’ Congruence Between Interests and Career Wishes, Peers’/Parents’ Vocations, and Gender-Untypical Career Decisions

Abstract

In the process of deciding for a career path, adolescents should come up with individually congruent decisions, i.e., career aspirations that match individual interests and skills. The present study investigated in a sample of 379 pre-vocational school students to which degree high or low individual congruence is accompanied by high or low congruence to peers’ aspirations and parents’ vocations. Latent Class Analysis identified two classes for boys and two for girls with different congruence profiles. A group of girls with overall low congruence values was especially notable. These girls often had gender-untypical career wishes and (as all girls) experienced low self-efficacy. The results advise to consider not only individual congruence but also congruence to peers and parents in career counseling.
