The objective of this research was to study the development of professional identity among veterinary students. 22 students enrolled in an elective course on Shelter Animal Medicine completed pre and post surveys on issues related to animal welfare, the role of the veterinarian, and the human-animal bond. A theoretical model derived from the data is proposed, which suggests that students transitioned from primarily approaching the content of the class as a student/layperson to beginning to view the content through the lens of a veterinarian. The results of the research suggest that professional schools are critical sites for continued research on the intersection of curriculum, professional socialization and identity, and the development of public policy.
