Teenagers’ Educational Aspirations From a Longitudinal Perspective

Thu, April 3, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Convention Center, Floor: 200 Level, Hall E

Abstract

The paper focuses on in- and out-of-school resources of students. From a longitudinal perspective it describes their educational aspirations and how these are shaped by in-and out-of-school resources. Results are drawn from the first of three cohorts of an empirical longitudinal study (NOESIS) carried out in Lower Austria from 2010 - 2014. This allows encountering the educational aspiration of students in a new school form aimed at broadening the educational base of all pupils within an inclusive school setting. Results indicate that educational aspirations of students in new middle schools are bound to the cultural capital, the socio-economic backgrounds of the students, their perception of peer resources in class, as well as their self esteem and learning motivation.
