This study used mixed methods to examine the student-focused characteristics of science programs in various high schools across Texas, USA. Twenty-eight sample schools classified on the basis of student diversity and science achievement were examined to characterize the science programs of highly successful, highly diverse high schools. Content analysis of science liaison interviews revealed science programs within highly diverse, highly successful schools provided more student focus by setting high expectations, providing teacher support for student learning, and personalizing instruction through student-centered practices. The student-focused characteristics of science programs in highly diverse high schools can serve as evidence to design science programs better adapted to serving the needs of all students.
