Investigating the Hegemonic Language of the “American Dream”

Fri, April 4, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Convention Center, Floor: 200 Level, Hall E

Abstract

A critically persistent issue in teacher education is providing students the knowledge and skills to pursue social justice. In this multiple case study, the researcher investigated ways to use trade books to promote dialogue focused on social class inequities. Findings suggest that investigating the connotations of terms associated with social class using critical literacy practices shows promise as a means to disrupt the hegemonic language of social class.
