Deciphering the Future in Secondary Science Fiction Classrooms: A Critical Multicultural Approach

Abstract

This research observes how race is discussed in the Science Fiction elective classroom. Such observations involve two sections of a Science Fiction course at a high school in a medium-sized city in Wisconsin. In addition to observing, the researcher integrates a selection of multicultural literature. Such integration has three aims. The first is to expand a curriculum considered by many to be dominated by white male writers and readers. Secondly, the study aims to welcome students of color into the classroom that otherwise may believe such literature does not speak to them. Lastly, the study seeks to engage students in discussions around race. Although difficult, such discussions are essential to living in an increasingly diverse world.
