Taking Care: The Relational Aspect of Early Childhood Teaching

Sun, April 6, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Marriott, Floor: Fourth Level, 406

Abstract

This study explored the ways in which one kindergarten teacher in a public, all girls’ school employed caring and how her students viewed being cared for. The methodological approach is feministic. Specifically, we employed the feminist oral histories approach (Anderson & Jack, 1991) in order to understand what was occurring in this kindergarten classroom. In this study, we discovered the ways this teacher cared and how that was translated for the students. Ultimately, we feel these ways of caring have implications for early childhood teacher preparation programs.
