Although there is growing research in the area of student perceptions case studies in engineering education, much of this research is quantitative. The current research study examined students’ perceptions of the impact of case-based instruction on their learning and engagement using in-depth qualitative interviews. Twenty-seven students enrolled in a mechanical engineering course at a large Midwestern university participated in the study. Students reported that case studies improved their problem solving abilities, conceptual understanding, real-world application of material, and increased interest and motivation in the course.
