Enrollment Decisions of the Underrepresented: Recruiting and College Choice at Military Institutions

Abstract

This study examined the college enrollment decisions of 20 ethnically and racially diverse high school students who applied to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy (CGA). We used college choice theory as a theoretical framework to understand the enrollment decisions of students considering selective institutions, like the CGA. We found that as enrollment options increased, so did the complexity of the enrollment decision. Family influence, academic preparation and finances were factors for all subjects during the choice process; however the level of influence varied. As students neared the end of the college search, financial need among students was neutralized, yielding to the pursuit of enjoyment in the college experience. We conclude with recommendations that inform researchers and leaders at the CGA.
