This paper draws on findings from a qualitative case study exploring instructional coach learning from problems of practice in a diverse school district. Drawing on sociocultural learning theory, specifically the idea of learning as guided participation in culturally valued activities, this study investigates what mediated coach learning in the context of problems of practice. Findings suggest that coaches navigated problems of prompting data-based instructional practice and problems of prompting instructional change. This study offers increased nuance to the field regarding the problematic nature of coaching. Findings suggest that coach learning in the context of problems is mediated by a combination of their own current and past experiences and values, as well as formal guidance from professional development for coaches.
