Reflection on Action in the Preschool Environment

Sat, April 5, 8:15 to 9:45am, Convention Center, Floor: 100 Level, 121C

Abstract

For decades, educators have been basalized and standardized by following a script developed by authors and researchers housed in publishing companies. As we speed into the era of knowledge, learning is not static and is in constant transformation. Standard-based instruction has slowly begun to transform as the broader and more active standards of Common Core are being implemented. This study shifts the lens from the publishers’ scripts and products to the stories of teachers applying an evaluative process called reflection-on-action (Schön, 1983, 1987) based in the real situations of the classroom. What ways do preschool educators apply professional practice or as Schön (1987) defines as acting in real situations with students? This study will present the stories of four preschool educators’ practices based on the documentation of student learning and application of the reflective processes influenced by the environment, curriculum structure and teaching.
