Enacting Sustainability Education in the Charter School Setting: Processes and Complexities

Abstract

A viable option for integrating the principles and practices of sustainability education appears to be the charter school setting, where school founders are encouraged to adopt innovative mission statements, experiment with curriculum and pedagogy, and are given greater flexibility over staffing. Unfortunately, little is known about how sustainability education might be enacted in the charter school setting. The purpose of this ten-month case study was to document how the founding members of secondary charter school designed a comprehensive model of sustainability education. Both the model created and the complexities involved with enacting sustainability education in a charter school are discussed.
