Factors Influencing the Tenure of Superintendents as Perceived by Superintendents and School Board Presidents

Abstract

The study was conducted to document the importance of factors, which may influence the tenure of the superintendents as perceived by superintendents and school board presidents. The Synergistic Leadership Theory guided the study. The Organizational and Leadership Effectiveness Inventory (OLEI), a 91-item instrument, was used for the purpose of data collection. The participants were 207 superintendents and 49 school board presidents in Texas. Results showed that the factor of Beliefs, Attitudes, and Values was the most important attribute in relation to superintendent tenure, followed by Leadership Behavior, Organizational Structure, and External Forces. Theoretical and practical implications were discussed.
