An Investigation of Web-Based Portfolios as Reflection Instruments in Preservice Teacher Education: The BOUNCE Case

Abstract

This mixed-methods study investigated the effectiveness of a newly designed web-based portfolio system, namely the BOUNCE System, which primarily focuses on improving preservice teachers’ reflective skills. BOUNCE©, the software component of the system, supports a pedagogical model including a cycle of activities to be performed in teaching practicum courses. The software accompanied with the pedagogical model is named as the BOUNCE System. The effectiveness of this system was evaluated by investigating the development of preservice teachers’ reflective skills over time. Preservice teachers demonstrated both high and lower level reflective skills throughout a semester. We also detected a statistically significant change in the number of high level reflection indicators from the first teaching experience to the second.
