A Linear Mixed-Model Analysis of Adolescents’ Math Interest

Abstract

The present study is to investigate the relationships between individual- and class/school-level factors and math interest. There are 4,477 participants which are draw from the eighth grade students in 2003 Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) database. The results of multilevel analyses in linear mixed models reveal that: (1) Individual-level factors (math self-efficacy) account for the variance of math interest. (2) Class/school-level factors (class/school average achievement and positive institute) are also significant predictors of math interest. Finally, detail results and suggestions for further research and implementation are discussed.
