Cooperative Learning in Physical Education: Pedagogical Approaches for Positively Interdependent Learning

Fri, April 4, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Convention Center, Floor: 200 Level, Hall E

Abstract

Whilst Cooperative Learning (CL) is considered an institutionalised pedagogical practice, CL in physical education (PE) is an innovation. Despite a burgeoning research base, literature around CL in PE is dominated by short research designs that do not afford an understanding of how CL is adapted to strengthen students’ learning over time. Therefore, the purpose is to explore CL in PE beyond the introductory phase. By examining teachers’ use and students’ learning during an academic year, adaptations that were significant in strengthening peer relations and attainment were the use of ill-structured tasks, competition, and the teacher’s role as a facilitator. This paper provides pedagogical approaches to create positively interdependent movement tasks that enhance attainment and peer relations beyond the introductory experiences.
