Curriculum Integration in Middle School: Creating Music Videos

Abstract

This study investigates the implementation of a middle school integrated unit (across all offered arts courses) developed from student-generated questions and focused on the creation of student-directed music videos. The case study seeks to investigate whether students achieved the initial learning goals of the project, how students perceived the integration of the arts disciplines in the creation of the final product, and the nature of the collaboration amongst the participating teachers. Preliminary analysis reveals that students participating in this unit developed an understanding of the components that comprise a music video, participated in constructing their own learning, and engaged with the project on a deeper level than in comparable units of study isolated within the individual disciplines.
