A Clinically Rich Residency Track for Teaching Assistants: The Development and Implementation of a Successful “Grow Your Own” Model

Abstract

Over the past several years, there has been a call to increase the clinical preparation of teachers in the United States. Coinciding with the wave of Residency programs, Grow Your Own programs (recruiting teachers from the communities where they live) have also experienced increased support. This presentation highlights an effective clinically rich residency model for TA’s that does not require an extended absence from their current position while they earn their MAT, and that promotes best-practice through intense clinical education. Quantitative and qualitative research supports the effectiveness of this model. This unique program highlights an approach teacher education programs can take to support the certification and advanced degree attainment of TAs, even when outside funding is not available.
