An Examination of the Advanced Placement Training and Incentive Program’s Impact in Virginia

Abstract

The primary purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between the National Math and Science Initiative’s Advanced Placement Training and Incentive Program and pass rates on Advanced Placement (AP) high school course exams in Virginia, particularly for traditionally underrepresented students in STEM courses. This study also allowed for an examination of pass rate trends in program schools beyond the initial three-year start-up period. Program impacts were measured using a rigorous matched comparison design. The overall goal of the study is to provide an empirical evaluation of the program’s ability to promote the representation of females, minorities, and economically disadvantaged students to stimulate and encourage interest in STEM-related careers for these populations.
