  In Roundtable Session: Innovations in Selected Standard Practice: Action Principles for State and Local Education Agencies

Abstract

It's not a matter of whether or not new digital technologies will revolutionize education—they have, and will continue to do so. Advances in digital education signals a major phase change in transforming teaching and learning. Tremendous synergy exists between such disruptive developments such as personalized learning (individualizing education not just for instruction but also interest), learning analytics (using formative and summative evaluation to determine what works from students to schools), online, hybrid, and blended delivery models (which promotes greater instructional reach), gaming technology (the clear use of levels, badges, mastery, and goals in learning), and much more. What role has and will educational research play in this seachange? Which technological advances occurring so rapidly, can the gold standard measure of randomized control hold up? Are there other methods that can rapidly and reliably inform educators about educational effectiveness? What role should developers, and frontline teachers play in identifying problems and potential solutions, and how are those findings to be communicated? This presentation will explore the interplay between “innovative” learning technologies and educational research, and comment on how the two can cooperate in this rapidly changing landscape.
