Thu, April 3, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Convention Center, Floor: Terrace Level, Terrace IV

Abstract

Research is beginning to examine the impact of cell phone use and text messaging on college students’ beliefs, attitudes, and behavioral outcomes. The relationships between Cell Phone Use (CPUse; N = 496) and Texting (N = 490) on Satisfaction with Life (SWL) mediated by Academic Performance (Grade Point Average [GPA]) and Anxiety were examined. Two separate Path Models indicated that the CPUse and Texting models had good overall fit. CPUse/Texting was negatively related to GPA and positively related to Anxiety. GPA was positively related and Anxiety was negatively related to SWL. These findings add to the debate about student cell phone use, and how increased used may negatively impact academic performance and overall well-being.
