A Narrative Inquiry Into Familial and School Curriculum Making: Attending to the Voices of Aboriginal Youths and Parents

Abstract

We are currently completing a narrative inquiry alongside urban Aboriginal youth and their families in Canada; the overall inquiry goal is to understand their educational and schooling experiences. Shifting focus from schools as the only place where curriculum is made, we draw on the conceptualization of children and families as also engaged as curriculum makers in homes, in communities, and in the in-between places of home and school (Huber, Murphy, & Clandinin, 2011). In this paper we explore the tensions and possibilities called forth when attending to these worlds, and explore the implications for schools. We consider the possibilities for innovation in practice and policy-making alongside Aboriginal youth and their families.
