This theoretical paper, by comparing and contrasting history, goals, and components of critical pedagogy and Ignatian pedagogy, shows how these approaches, in tandem, support socially just education. Ignatian pedagogy, with its well-formulated methods of instruction, informs the often weakly operationalized methods of critical pedagogy. Critical pedagogy, with its unabashed curricular focus on analysis and transformation of inequitable structures in schools and society, supports students of Ignatian pedagogy to move beyond mercy to advocacy and reform. Finally, Ignatian pedagogy models the normative values-based rationale for socially just practice while critical pedagogy safeguards against a one meta-narrative approach to enacting that practice. Moving both critical pedagogy and Ignatian pedagogy out of parochial enclaves and into creative dialogue can support socially just education.
