Sailing Together: Interprofessional Collaboration for Youth With Developmental Disabilities and Mental Health Illness

Abstract

The purpose of this bound case study is to explore a school based interprofessional collaborative approach to address the complex needs of students with both mental health illness and developmental disabilities. In response to the lack of appropriate health services that were available for students who presented with dual diagnosis, one urban school district created a school-based interprofessional team to address the student’s complex needs. Observation ad interviews were conducted with 21 past and present pre-service practicum students and professionals who have worked on the interprofessional team over the past eight years. Four themes emerged from the data: Team Achievements, Structural Assets, Unexplored Potential and Future Challenges.
