This paper utilizes Badiou’s philosophical opus to theorize where a radical break may occur within current U.S. mathematics education. As an educational researcher, I began this work in an effort to make sense of the complex, often contradictory language about mathematics in education policy. The original purpose of this landscape is to give researchers the knowledge of the structure of policy so that we may work to envision where revolutionary changes can take place. However, as this work progressed, a new objective emerged, one that asks under what condition does a Badiouian subject emerge? Thus, this work not only shares findings from a Badiouian set theoretical analysis, but also reflects upon the subjective experience of doing such philosophical work.
