Confronting Issues of Diversity in Teacher Preparation Through a Radical Field Experience

Mon, April 7, 8:15 to 9:45am, Convention Center, Floor: Terrrace Level, Terrace III

Abstract

This study discusses the outcomes of providing pre-service secondary teachers with an authentic clinical experience in a school where the student population is largely comprised of sexually, racially/ethnically, and economically under-represented groups. Furthermore, this school aims to meet the needs of these students through non-traditional philosophies. This study demonstrates these intersections in that the immersion experience took place in a school whose mission is to address many facets of social injustice in one place to foster a sense of family within the walls of the school, while promoting a concept of responsibility and caring for the outside community.
