Research studies have been ambivalent about the role of community colleges with respect to postsecondary outcomes. Most studies compare bachelor’s completion rates of transfer students relative to direct four-year college entrants. Yet, exploring bachelor’s completion alone does not provide the complete picture as non-degree earners could be still be enrolled in college at the end of a study, making progress towards degree completion. Using propensity score matching and a post-treatment adjustment, this study compares two postsecondary outcomes for community college transfer students relative to students who directly entered four year institutions: bachelor’s completion and enrollment status at the end of the study for those lacking such degrees. We found no significant difference between transfers and native juniors in either outcome.
