Increasing College Access and STEM Career Interest for Latino Students Through a University-School-Community Partnership Program

Sun, April 6, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Marriott, Floor: Fifth Level, Grand Ballroom J

Abstract

In this paper, we describe results of a project that involves a suite of community and K-12 programs for increasing Latino students’ access to college and into STEM careers. The project included mentoring programs for middle and high school students, a graduate teaching fellow program at the middle and high schools, and four community events for parents and students. Results indicated that students, parents, teachers, mentors, and Fellows believed the various programs increased student interest in college attendance and STEM careers. Further, a high percentage of seniors in the mentoring program (84%) were accepted into college and have plans to attend in the Fall.
